In celebration of our 10th Anniversary season, Apollo travels to far-off lands, exploring mystical sound worlds and forging new interpretive pathways.
We welcome esteemed Indian classical musician Chitravina N. Ravikiran to the Houston stage for a special collaborative concert with dancers from Silambam Houston and double bass virtuoso Robin Kesselman, principal of the Houston Symphony. Ravikiran’s revolutionary system of Melharmony finds a true companion in Apollo’s continuing quest to intersect disparate musical genres and to innovate through our 20x2020 commissioning project. In Ravikiran’s own words: “Tradition and innovation are two sides of the same coin.”
Legendary composer-conductor Virko Baley creates a new commission spotligh ng music from Ukraine and Crimea, featuring Ukrainian-American pianist Pavel Gintov. We con nue this anniversary season by probing the origins and incep on of Apollo. What is behind our passion for folk music? Which composers inspired us to launch 20x2020 and endeavor to celebrate Houston’s global diversity through music and art? What are our aspirations for impacting humanity in the next decade?
We return to the Southeast Asia for our season-finale with a new work by Vietnamese experimental composer Vũ Nhât Tân, starring Emmy Award-winning đàn bầu musician Vanessa Võ. The trailblazing ensemble WindSync joins for a first-ever collaboration. As in years past, guests from local refugee service organizations take part in panel discussions and provide a face for this nation’s beautiful cultural tapestry.
On behalf of the board and artists of Apollo Chamber Players, we thank you - our patrons, friends, mentors - for helping us reach this important milestone. We are honored and most grateful.
