HOUSTON ─ From January 14-22, 2017, Apollo Chamber Players will travel to Cuba as guests of Parma Recordings and record the ensemble's most recent 20x2020 commission, Imágenes de Cuba by Rice University faculty composer Arthur Gottschalk.
• Recording sessions will take place at the world-class Abdala Studios in Havana and include collaborations with Cuban musicians. Abdala Studios has been the recording home of numerous acclaimed Cuban musicians such as Omara, Diva of the Buena Vista Social Club, and Silvio Rodríguez, Grammy-winning folk music singer.
• Apollo will present a public concert and outreach program for students & children, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Cuban Arts Institute.
• Imágenes de Cuba is based on Cuban dance rhythms (the timba and manisero), popular songs like Guantanamera, and the guajira, a style of Cuban music akin to ‘country music’. It also features the shakere, an indigenous percussion instrument.
Watch world premiere of Imágenes de Cuba at MATCH in Midtown Houston, 5/22/16.
Parma Recordings President & CEO Bob Lord: “Apollo’s incredible collective talents and open-minded, energetic, and collaborative attitude will represent PARMA and the U.S. very well in our interactions with our Cuban musicians and partners.”
Apollo artistic director Matthew J. Detrick states: "We are proud to call Houston - one of America’s most culturally diverse cities - our home, and we are honored to help usher in this new era of artistic partnership between the US and Cuba, reaching hundreds of Cubans through live performance and countless listeners through the recording." (Release date Fall 2017.)
