Trace of Time is a journey of musical discovery and cultural connections, from spirituals to the evolution of the Tango. Forever changed by the perseverance and progressive genius of Astor Piazzolla, tango – and its rhythmic brethren the milonga and waltz – expanded from purely dance music to encompass the richness of instrumental forms. Hector Del Curto’s masterpiece Trace of Time celebrates this advancement, while reecting heartfelt fragments of his past mentorship with Piazzolla and fellow tango masters Osvaldo Pugliese and Pablo Ziegler. This commission was composed during the COVID pandemic, and Del Curto expresses his wish for this piece to “serve as a trace to nd myself in the future when looking back to this challenging time for human history.”
Like Piazzolla, composer Adolphus Hailstork was moved to embrace the music of his heritage by famed Parisian pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. Deep River: Rhapsody for String Quartet is a culmination of Hailstork’s love of spirituals and gift of musical craftsmanship instilled by his teacher.
Generations removed, American composer Jessie Montgomery harkens back to childhood memories in shaping her raucously exhilarating Voodoo Dolls. Apollo’s seventh album includes an homage to the ensemble’s Texas roots. Julia Smith’s rediscovered Quartet for Strings yearns with post-romantic expressiveness, jiving jubilantly with the grandeur and majesty of the Lone Star State.
